Okay guys I need help my brother in law says the Impala, yes, BABY  is a piece of  shit car and NO ONE likes it because four door cars aren’t cool. PLEASE reblog this to show how much the Impala is loved and show him what an idiot he’s being.image

image

Wait. He said it’s not cool because it has four doors? What does he drive? A smart car?

HE SAID WHAT

As a gear head, let me give you some insight into this.

In the classic car world, 4 door cars are considered undesirable, because they’re “not really muscle cars,” they’re more like sedans. And sedans are the sort of thing you drive to do your errands, not to be a badass (and before you’re like BUT THOSE CARS LOOK SO BAD ASS HOW COULD THEY NOT BE BAD ASS, HOW COULD THEY BE A FAMILY CAR please be aware of the fact that in 1967 THERE WAS AN IMPALA STATION WAGON IN PRODUCTION. Yes. That grill and front bumper. On a station wagon.). The technical term is “grocery getters.” However, it is a very widely held opinion (at least by all of the other gear heads I know, plenty who don’t watch SPN), that the Impala 4 door hardtop is an exception to this rule. Why? Because of one very important detail:

It’s postless.

There is in fact such thing as a 1967 Impala 4 door sedan, and by simply adding a post in between the two doors, the car becomes incredibly… pedestrian. See, look:

image

It just breaks up the lines entirely. Dean’s does not have this. Roll down the windows, you’re left with this:

image

It retains all the badass lines of the coupe version of the Impala, however, it looks less silly than the coupe does (because the Impala is A RIDICULOUSLY HUGE CAR, like I don’t think people even realize how huge, and having only two doors on a full sized car like that just looks kind of… well dumb).

So your brother in law is not dumb for saying that 4 door cars are not desirable  he’s absolutely right. However, he is wrong in this specific instance. Also, another thing worth noting is the fact that in our little SPN bubble, we seem to forget the fact that the Impala is not a quote on quote “sought after” classic car in this model year. The sort of people who owned them back in the day were the people who would black jack you and stuff you in their trunk, and the sort of late 60’s muscle cars that do well at auction are the ones that catered to racetrack enthusiasts (something to note, the Impala was chosen by Kripke for this exact reason. He knew he wanted a classic muscle car, and almost went with a 65 Mustang, but the main reason he changed his mind is that he wanted something more intimidating, and his neighbor literally said “it has to be a ‘67 Impala, because you can put a body in the trunk.” He wanted a car that if somebody pulled up next to you in it, you’d lock your doors). Hence why Camaros, Corvettes and Chevelles do so well. Impalas (along with their sister models, the Biscayne, the Bel Air and the Caprice) were full sized, and honestly thought of like the way we think of huge SUVs now. They are not “collector” cars. The Impalas, Biscaynes, Bel Airs and Caprices that typically garner attention at auction are the far earlier models— late fifties, early sixties. The 67 is a bit of a sleeper, and that’s something you should be thanking your lucky stars for if you ever want to own one, because it means you can get one for a reasonable price. I’m not saying it isn’t a gorgeous car. I mean, look at that front grill and bumper, that coke bottle body, the lines, the proportions. It’s a fucking thing of beauty. I’m just saying that if your brother in law is a classic car guy, there is absolutely a reason why the 1967 Chevrolet Impala 4-dr Hardtop isn’t on his radar, and it’s because they don’t receive the same hype as their other late sixties Chevrolet counterparts.

Now have a picture of an Impala station wagon, because they’re hilarious:
